Old Town, Flag Square and the Muradie Mosque

The historic heart of Vlora: where Albania declared independence in 1912, a 16th-century Ottoman mosque, and the old quarter on the hill.

Vlora is where Albanian independence was declared on 28 November 1912, and the city centre is built around that fact: the Independence Monument stands in Flag Square (Sheshi i Flamurit) at the heart of the centre, and the National Museum of Independence is about 2 km away, by the port.

A short walk from the monument, the 16th-century Muradie Mosque is a small, finely built Ottoman mosque attributed to the architect Sinan. The Ethnographic and History museums are close by, and just above the centre the Kuzum Baba hill gives a wide, free view over the city and the bay.

This is the sheltered half-day: when the wind is up or the heat is heavy, the centre, the museums and the cafés around the square are the easy plan.
