Kanina Castle and the view over the bay

A hilltop castle above the village of Kanina, south-east of the city: Illyrian origins, walls rebuilt by Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans, and the whole bay at your feet.

Kanina sits on the hills about six kilometres from the centre, and its castle crowns the ridge above the village. The National Tourism Agency dates the fortification to the Illyrian period and records rebuilding by the Romans, the Byzantines and the Ottomans; what you see today are defensive walls, towers and interior spaces with archaeological remains.

The reason most people come is the view. From the walls the city, the Lungomare, Sazan Island and the Karaburun ridge line up in one panorama — the camera’s view of the bay, seen from the other side and from much higher up. Late afternoon, when the sun drops towards Sazan, is the time to be there.
