Apollonia, near Fier, was founded by Greek colonists in the early 6th century BC and became one of the great cities of the Adriatic coast; its hilltop ruins and monastery make an unhurried morning.
Berat, further inland, is one of Albania’s two Ottoman-era towns listed together by UNESCO as World Heritage. Its white houses stacked up the hillside below the castle give it the nickname “city of a thousand windows”.
Doing both in one day means an early start and several hours on the road. Organised day tours from Vlora combine them (some add Zvërnec on the way); with a hire car you can set your own pace.
