Supermarkets and everyday shopping

Self-catering or just stocking up on water and sunscreen: Vlora has chain supermarkets, a minimarket on almost every block, bakeries and fresh produce. No directory — just how it works.

Where to shop

  • Supermarkets. National and international chains operate in Albania; SPAR, for example, reported opening a new company-owned supermarket in Vlora in August 2025. Supermarkets are the place for a bigger shop, card payment and the widest choice.
  • Minimarkets. Small neighbourhood shops are everywhere, including near the beaches, and usually keep long hours. Expect cash-first at the smaller ones.
  • Beach and promenade kiosks sell water, ice cream and the basics at visitor prices.

We do not list individual shops: they open, close and change hands too often to keep a reliable directory. A map app search for “supermarket” or “market” near you is the quickest answer.

Bread, fruit and fish

  • Bakeries (furra buke) open early for bread and byrek — savoury pastry with cheese, spinach or meat, the classic Albanian breakfast or snack.
  • Fruit and vegetables are sold at stalls and greengrocers across the city; in summer, local tomatoes, figs, peaches and watermelons are the thing to buy.
  • Fish and seafood are sold at fishmongers; Vlora Bay is an important area for mussel farming, according to the National Tourism Agency.
  • Olive oil from the Dukat area south of the city is a good thing to take home.

Practical tips

  • Water: UK advice is not to drink tap water in Albania — buy large bottles of water at a supermarket rather than single bottles at kiosks.
  • Payment: cards are generally fine in supermarkets; carry lek for small shops.
  • Public holidays: banks and offices close, and shop hours can change. See the public holidays list.
  • Bags: bring a reusable bag for the walk back from the shop.
